    John Baird, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada in the cabinet of Prime Minister Stephen Harper was awarded by the President of the Republic of Poland Mr. Andrzej Duda with Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit.

    The ceremony took place at the Embassy of Poland in Ottawa on November 22, 2017 and was attended by members of family and friends, Canadian parliamentarians, representatives of Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development as well as Polish diaspora.


    - I am extremely happy to honour today a great friend of Poland Mr. John Baird. We will never forget that he was one of the most vocal supporters of strengthening NATO’s eastern flank. Canadian soldiers stationed for over three years in Poland and that decision on this Polish-Canadian cooperation was made during your posting as Canada’s foreign minister – said ambassador Andrzej Kurnicki. - We also appreciate that John Baird from the very beginning was involved in the activities supporting democratic movements in Ukraine during the Maidan revolution. He also began, on the Canadian side, our bilateral cooperation for Ukraine at that time, that was crowned with the Statement of principles between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland and the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development of Canada for coordinated engagement on Ukraine and Eastern Europe – added ambassador.


    John Baird emphasized In his speech, that Poland and Canada share the same values and interests. – Poland went to tremendous changes on its path to democracy and now is an example for other countries such as Ukraine to follow.


    John Russell Baird, PC (born May 26, 1969) served from 2011 to 2015 as Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and he had been a member of the federal cabinet, in various positions, since 2006. Previously he was a provincial cabinet minister in Ontario. As foreign affairs minister, Baird paid a visit to Poland in April 2014, amidst the crisis related to Russian aggression of Ukraine. President of the Republic of Poland awarded Mr. John Baird with Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit in recognition of his merits in developing Polish-Canadian  cooperation within the framework of North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
